Carmela Dutra has done an excellent job in her debut children’s book, Lorenzo the Bear: Encounter at Jelly Fish Cove. The illustrations are whimsical and charming in its vintage styling. It is a pleasant change of pace from today’s computer generated cartoons often found in children’s books.

The adventurous story line will capture young readers as they follow Lorenzo who bravely set out to save his friend, Lucy. He is soon joined in his efforts by such colorful characters as Toucan Tracy, Leo the Lion and Ruby the Raccoon. Together they battle the pirate, Lord Boris the Red-Butted Baboon! It is beautiful lesson of the bond of friendship and the triumph over evil.

I hope to see more adventures from Lorenzo and his friends in the future.

This is a cute children’s book. My 4 yr old really enjoyed it. The illustrations were fantastic and definitely the highlight of the book. I really like the story. There were a couple of errors in my copy, which is the only reason it is not a 5 star rating. I’m sure that wouldn’t bother the target audience, though.

There can’t be a one of us that hasn’t spent time lost in an imaginary world, dreaming up adventures for ourselves, whether it be as a robot or a dinosaur or a pirate. Lorenzo here wants to live his dream, and when his friend Lucy is taken, he has an opportunity to show how much friendship means to him.

Our hero has a very happy-go-lucky nature about him, an approachable quality that will make him very appealing to young readers. He also looks very cuddly, and will remind children of their own bears, perhaps get them wondering what their teddies imagine themselves to be…
Lorenzo practices with his swords everyday, and there’ll be lots of children that read this who practice something regularly as well, be it dancing or sport or a musical instrument, so they can identify with the hero bear on this level as well. Like some of those that will read this story, Lorenzo was brought up as an only child, so imaginative play is particularly important for him, as is the close friendship he has made with Lucy.

It’s not just Lorenzo himself who’s imaginative: the story is as well, and the illustrations put a big smile on my face from the instant I saw Lorenzo with his pirate swords. Colour fills every page – bright blue skies, rolling hills for Lorenzo and Lucy to explore, and a whole believable world. This is a classic tale of rescue given an energetic and colourful boost

There’s a great villain in Lord Boris the Red-Butted Baboon (who’s going to be quite hard to forget), and the author even manages to use this evil pirate to show a depth to our Lorenzo: he still gives the baddie an opportunity to show a better side of himself. It makes for a well-rounded role-model. Instead of just charging in and giving the baboon a good whacking, he allows his opponent another chance, tries to be reasonable, and it would be hoped that this is a lesson that young readers could learn when it comes to their own lives.

Lorenzo is determined to learn to practice his sword fighting as someday he may need it to defend himself against a real live pirate.
He meets many friends along the way, Lucy being his favorite. They realize in their “small world” they have many things in common too!

I read “Lorenzo the Bear: Encounter at Jellyfish Cove” to my 6 year old son and he LOVED it! He really enjoyed how Lorenzo trained with the swords (you know, just in case he ever meets a pirate) and then actually ends up having to fight real pirates! The art was cute and colorful and the storyline was engaging. My son was also very happy when I told him that there is a second book! We will definitely be checking it out soon!

The Adventures of Lorenzo the Bear: Encounter at Jellyfish Cove is a children’s book written and illustrated by Carmela Dutra. Lorenzo practices his sword-fighting every day, and the other animals always used to wonder why he did so. He’d explain that he was practicing in case he had to fight a pirate, and they’d all laugh at him when he said that. One day, he met another bear named Lucy who didn’t laugh at his practicing and actually wanted to practice along with him. They had fun meeting up every day and fighting with Lorenzo’s swords until one day Lucy wasn’t at their meeting place. He searched all over for her in vain, until he went to the lake where his friend Larry the Lobster told him that Lucy had been captured by a pirate.

Carmela Dutra’s children’s adventure book, The Adventures of Lorenzo the Bear at Jellyfish Cove, is a delight! Dutra combines an exciting and fun adventure tale with some of the most inspired illustrations I’ve seen in some time. Her drawings are deceptively simplistic until you start to examine her use of perspective, scale and coloring. My eyes danced as they followed along the hilly trail that leads Lorenzo to Lucy, and I loved looking at the expressions of the birds who help Lorenzo rescue his friend. Then there’s the fearsome pirate, Lord Boris the Red-Butted Baboon, whose grim and scowling face is just marvelous. Every page of The Adventures of Lorenzo the Bear: Encounter at Jellyfish Cove is filled with story and eye-popping art. As I read it, I sat with a huge smile on my face — and I’m still smiling. This a kid’s book to get excited about, and it is most highly recommended.
